Antiques antics — why are young people buying old stuff?

Madison Darbyshire in the Financial Times notes that the popularity of antiques and, consequently, their cost has risen considerably in past few years. She highlights the

importance of a comfortable home in the national psyche following the pandemic and how antiques instil a feeling of nostalgia and a 'cosy' atmosphere that cannot be achieved by the 'minimalist aesthetic seeded by premade-but-not-cheap design outfits'.


Darbyshire also counters the 'generational mythology' that antiques hold no interest for millennials who focus their energies on chasing experiences not things. It is in fact demand from environmentally conscious younger consumers that are driving demand.
